Gabord duo share Lausitz victories
The Gabord Competicion team continued its domination of the Dallara Nissan World Series with a pair of 1-2 victories at the Eurospeedway Lausitz in Germany, with drivers Frank Montagny and Heikki Kovalainen taking a win apiece
Pole-sitter Kovalainen encountered problems with a slipping clutch at the start of race one, which allowed his team-mate to take the lead into the first corner. The Frenchman then comfortably held off the Finn to take his seventh victory of the year by a margin of five seconds.
Stephane Sarrazin came home third, after a long battle with Racing Engineering team-mate Bas Leinders. Ander Vilarino finished fifth, with Narain Karthikeyan sixth.
Kovalainen made amends for his poor race one start in the second event, comfortably leading into the first turn, ahead of Karthikeyan, Leinders and Montagny. The championship leader soon worked his way past Leinders, and was soon pressuring Karthikeyan. The battle between the two ended in acrimony when Montagny made a move into the final chicane. The pair made contact, with the Indian pitched into a spin.
Montagny was able to continue, and closed right up to the back of Kovalainen, but in the end backed off and settled for points, allowing the Finn to take his first win in the category. Jean-Christophe Ravier finished third, after putting some pressure on Montagny late in the race. Karthikeyan recovered to finish fourth, ahead of Leinders and Bernoldi.
