Caterham Formula 1 protege Will Stevens stays in FR3.5 with Strakka

Caterham Formula 1 junior racer Will Stevens will stay with Strakka Racing for the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 season

The 22-year-old, who finished fourth in the 2013 standings with the team, has decided to compete for a third year in FR3.5 rather than moving across to Caterham's GP2 squad.

"My goal is to be in F1, and having discussed this with the Caterham Racing Academy, we have decided the right route for me is to stay in FR3.5 and win the championship," said Stevens.

"We gave the switch to GP2 very serious consideration and I like the series but I have never in my career had two consecutive seasons in the same category with the same team, and the chance to do that swung the decision."

Stevens, who raced for Carlin in his debut FR3.5 season in 2011, is optimistic that his Caterham ties will get him some more F1 mileage after he had a day of running in the Silverstone young driver test last year.

"As part of my participation in the academy, the team will give me as much exposure to F1 as they can to assist in my development," he said.

"I'm hoping to get some more F1 testing during the year in order to continue my preparation for the next step towards my ultimate objective, which is a race seat with Caterham."

Stevens will be one of the FR3.5 title favourites in 2014, having only finished behind Kevin Magnussen, Stoffel Vandoorne and Antonio Felix da Costa last season.
