Alguersuari tops final Barcelona test

British F3 champion Jaime Alguersuari headed the final Formula Renault 3.5 test session ahead of tomorrow's opening race of the season at Barcelona

Alguersuari's lap of 1m33.537s, set with just seconds remaining in the hour-long session, demolished the previous best time recorded by Bertrand Baguette by seven tenths of a second.

Third-year driver Baguette was bumped down to third by an outstanding late effort from Tech 1's rookie Brendon Hartley. The Kiwi, Alguersuari's team-mate at Carlin Motorsport in British F3 las season, just completed his flying lap as the chequered flag came out.

The second to fifth place drivers were separated by just hundredths of a second with Turvey fourth behind Baguette and ahead of Adrian Zaugg.

Like Hartley, Zaugg showed no ill effects of having missed the pre-season tests, with his Interwetten team having brought in long time Carlin FR3.5 team manager Harvey Spencer to work on his car.

Charles Pic shaved 0.04s off his morning time but repeated his earlier position of sixth. The Frenchman ended the day one place ahead of the morning pacesetter Miguel Molina, who concentrated on race set-up work.

Expected frontrunner James Walker was hit by gearbox problems and ended the session 11th.
