Long Beach Formula E: Lucas di Grassi fastest in free practice

Lucas di Grassi led the way in Formula E free practice at Long Beach, topping two of the three sessions at the US street circuit

The Audi sportscar driver was comfortably fastest in the second session as the only driver to get under 58 seconds with a 57.3s, and in the final session he was the only man able to better that as he set a 57.2s around the halfway stage.

The rest of the field got closer in the final session though, with Jean-Eric Vergne, championship leader Nicolas Prost, Nelson Piquet Jr and Scott Speed all around three tenths of a second adrift of the Brazilian.

The final session before qualifying ended with very little action, as most drivers headed to the pits a few minutes before the chequered flag after setting their best laps early on.

After di Grassi's 57.3s caught the eye in second practice, his closest rivals wasted little time proving that they weren't too far adrift in the final session, as several drivers got into the mid 57s on their first runs.

While Vergne ended free practice with the second fastest time of the morning, his running didn't go entirely to plan, as he was one of two drivers to crash.

The Andretti Autosport driver heavily damaged one of his cars when he hit the tyres after going wide at Turn 5 in FP2.

In the first session Daniel Abt became the first driver to hit the barriers at the Turn 1/2 chicane, which has been a point of contention among the drivers over the last few days.

Abt launched his front wheels into the air by running wide over the raised kerbs that several drivers are concerned about, which left him powerless to keep his car away from the outside wall.

Prost's e.dams team-mate Sebastien Buemi ended final practice bottom of the timesheets, but he was a frontrunner in the previous sessions, setting the second fastest time in FP2 and sixth-quickest lap in FP1.
