Gil de Ferran becomes Formula E ambassador

The Brazilian will become an official spokesperson for the series, particularly in North America.

"Electric vehicles are undoubtedly playing an increasing role in the transportation landscape worldwide and as such, electric car racing will provide the perfect platform to help accelerate the development of relevant technologies and showcase the potential in an exciting way," said de Ferran.

"The FIA Formula E Championship is the leading global initiative in electric car racing and I am thrilled and honoured to be able to lend my expertise to this exciting and ground breaking endeavour."

De Ferran won back-to-back Champ Car titles with Penske in 2000/01 before following the team to what was then the Indy Racing League, where he won the Indianapolis 500 in 2003.

He retired at the end of that season and had a spell running Honda's F1 team before making a comeback as an owner/driver in the American Le Mans Series with Honda's Acura programme. The De Ferran team also briefly fielded an IndyCar squad.

Formula E is due to commence in September 2014. The electric series will race exclusively on city street tracks, including Las Vegas in America and Rio de Janeiro in de Ferran's Brazilian homeland.

Ex-F1 driver Lucas di Grassi is already working with Formula E as a test driver and ambassador.

OPINION: With Audi's Formula E exit imminent, it had nothing to lose in London by attempting to vault Lucas di Grassi into the lead by pitting him under the safety car. Scorn directed at the team for putting glory before ethics should instead be pointed at a rulebook that allowed such a move in the first place

Why consistency can't be relied upon for Formula E title success

It's commonly upheld as the most straightforward method of racking up titles. Why Formula E is plotting a major change of philosophy

Formula E has become famed for its unpredictability, which can yield exciting races - but it can be argued that it robs the all-electric championship of a clear narrative and doesn't adequately reward the best drivers. The series wants to change that, and renew its philosophy ahead of the introduction of its next-generation car

How Formula E stood up to F1 comparisons in Monaco

OPINION: It was no surprise to anybody that the laptimes achieved by Formula E cars on the full Monaco circuit were much slower than Formula 1. But perhaps the more relevant comparison was in the racing spectacle, where FE delivered in spades
