The 27-year-old previously competed in British Formula Ford and ADAC Formel Masters, and last month returned to the track in a Castle Combe FF1600 race after several years focusing on his business commitments.

He will be an official spokesman for the electric series and drive the FE car during promotional events.

OPINION: Formula E is not green racing on trial

"It's a real honour to be given this opportunity with Formula E and to use it to help make people more aware of the championship, as well as to highlight the importance of sustainable mobility and clean energy," Hunt said.

"As a long-time advocate of the environment, I believe what Formula E is trying to achieve is fantastic and I'm looking forward to being a part of this and also to test the car."

Hunt will compete in the MRF Challenge later this year as team-mate to Mathias Lauda - the son of Hunt senior's 1976 F1 title rival Niki Lauda.

The top 10 Formula E drivers of 2020-21

OPINION: The 2021 Formula E campaign was one without a narrative for much of the season, with no single car or driver able to break away from the pack. OPINION: The departure of Audi from Formula E meant its long-time driver Lucas di Grassi would need to find a new berth to stay on the grid. His deal at Venturi Racing will ensure the championship's first-ever race winner will remain competitive into the final year of the current Gen2 ruleset - although it may not be a long-term fit
