As reported last week, 18 cars will contest the remainder of the 2015/16 season.

Agag told Autosport he did not hold the problems against Trulli, whose team did not enter either of the first two rounds of season two after a customs issue in Beijing and failing scrutineering in Putrajaya.

"It's very sad," he admitted. "Jarno has been fantastic for Formula E, he's a great guy and we've known him and Lucio [Cavuto, team manager] for years and years.

"They came to Formula E early, they were really supportive and really believed in the project.

"It was not their fault, it was a technology supplier that did not deliver what they had to.

"I really hope we can meet Jarno again along the road, we're going to keep in touch and see if there's a future.

"Jarno is a great friend of Formula E and the door will always be open."

Francesco Test, CEO of the Trulli team, said: "After failing scrutineering in the Beijing and Putrajaya ePrix and in light of our commercial agreement with Formula E Holdings, we are forced to announce the retirement of Trulli Formula E from the FIA Formula E Championship.

"As major supporters of this all electric series, we are please to leave space for a new OEM to enter the series and further help develop the series and electric racing technology."
