Formula E adjusts Montreal, New York dates but WEC clash remains

Formula E has swapped its season-ending races in North America and will now conclude its 2016/17 campaign in Montreal

Formula E adjusts Montreal, New York dates but WEC clash remains

The electric single-seater series was due to finish its third season in New York with a double-header on July 29-30.

Instead, that event - the Brooklyn circuit for which was revealed earlier this month - will swap with Montreal's original date on July 15-16.

Autosport understands the change came at the request of the organisers in the US.

It means the New York race, described as a "dream" by series CEO Alejandro Agag, will now clash with the World Endurance Championship's Nurburgring round - which has been confirmed on July 16.

The likes of 2015/16 FE champion Sebastien Buemi and runner-up Lucas di Grassi compete in both categories.

FE's final 2016/17 calendar also omits the two 'TBA' rounds announced in July.

It means the series will remain at 10 events for a third consecutive season.

The calendar announcement was made as part of a raft of decisions from the FIA's World Motor Sport Council meeting in Paris.

In addition to confirming McLaren Applied Technologies as the battery supplier from the 2018/19 season, it also approved the immediate introduction of a "power ramp down" for cars that exceed the maximum allowed energy usage.

Cars must linearly reduce to 0kW within five seconds, with the rear light flashing.

After the car crosses the pit-in line in the first car, or the finish line in the second car, the driver must be able to reactivate power to continue the race, or return to the pits.

If a driver cannot reach the pit-in line or the finish line before the car halts, they will be out of the race - the rule is a move to make it easier to follow what happens when a driver uses too much energy, and replaces post-race penalties for that infringement.

FINAL 2016/17 FE CALENDAR

Hong Kong October 9
Marrakech November 12
Buenos Aires February 18
Mexico City April 1
Monaco May 13
Paris May 20
Berlin June 10
Brussels July 1
New York July 15/16
Montreal July 29/30

OPINION: The departure of Audi from Formula E meant its long-time driver Lucas di Grassi would need to find a new berth to stay on the grid. His deal at Venturi Racing will ensure the championship's first-ever race winner will remain competitive into the final year of the current Gen2 ruleset - although it may not be a long-term fit

It hasn't been properly reflected by the points table, but Antonio Felix da Costa has been nigh-on flawless in his Formula E title defence in 2021. Returning to the scene of his Berlin dominance in 2020, he has the chance to set the record straight and claim a remarkable against-the-odds second title

OPINION: With Audi's Formula E exit imminent, it had nothing to lose in London by attempting to vault Lucas di Grassi into the lead by pitting him under the safety car. Scorn directed at the team for putting glory before ethics should instead be pointed at a rulebook that allowed such a move in the first place

Why consistency can't be relied upon for Formula E title success

It's commonly upheld as the most straightforward method of racking up titles. But, due to the unique qualifying format used in Formula E, a consistent approach can actively work against a driver and make their life harder in races. So with four races to go, is now the time to ditch the tried-and-tested approach for a win-or-bust mentality?
