Wittmann, Melker on Zandvoort poles

Marco Wittmann and Nigel Melker claimed the two pole positions on offer during qualifying for the third round of the F3 Euro Series at Zandvoort

An exciting finale to the session included three different drivers; Signature men Wittmann and Laurens Vanthoor plus Mucke man Melker, all holding the top spot during the last two minutes.

However, it was Wittmann who emerged fastest with a final flying lap in 1m29.602s to take pole position for Sunday's third and last race, 0.092s quicker than Melker and less than two tenths clear of fellow Mucke driver Felix Rosenqvist and Vanthoor.

Pole for Saturday's opening race of the Zandvoort round, however, went to Dutchman Melker for the first time in the Euro Series. This is because his second best lap time of 1m29.729s was faster than any of his rivals.

Rosenqvist will start alongside him for race one, making it the first all-Mucke front row in the Euro Series since 2003, while Wittmann and Vanthoor will be right behind them on the grid.

Daniel Abt, in the third Signature car, took a career-best fifth for race three and equaled it later on with another flyer.

Championship leader Robert Merhi had a poor session after making a mistake on fresh rubber. His best two laps were only good enough for seventh on the grid for each race, one place behind his Prema team-mate Daniel Juncadella on both occasions.

The grid for race two will feature the top eight race one finishers in reversed order.
