VW eager to boost FIA F3 Trophy
Volkswagen motorsport boss Kris Nissen has thrown his support behind the introduction of the new FIA International Formula 3 Trophy, claiming it will prove integral in maintaining F3's status among the junior categories
Shrinking grids during 2010 and the departure of the elite ART Grand Prix team ahead of the 2011 season had prompted speculation over the future of the Euro Series in particular.
However Nissen, whose company supplies engines to double-Macau winning outfit Signature, along with other teams, says the new initiative will help arrest the slide - and called upon the VW-powered teams to get behind it.
"We think it's fantastic," Nissen told AUTOSPORT. "It's always good when the FIA wants to push something. I think that everybody knows Formula 3 deserves to stay.
"If you look at the top drivers in Formula 1, most of them come out of Formula 3. So I think this is a very good decision from the FIA.
"From Volkswagen, we hope that our teams can and will support it, and we also believe this is a good direction to keep Formula 3 on a high level and stable for the next years."
The F3 International Trophy, which will be contested over six rounds parallel to the British and Euro Series - and which includes the blue-riband events at Macau and Pau - will be run for the first time this year.
