Torrential rain causes schedule delays to the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort

Qualifying for the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort has been delayed after torrential rain hit the circuit early on Saturday morning

Torrential rain causes schedule delays to the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort

The day had been set to commence with the first of three Formula Ford races, but after just two laps, the first of which was run behind the safety car, the race was abandoned due to the weather.

That prompted a two-hour delay with conditions too severe for any further running. The sudden downpour also caused problems away from the track, with the access tunnel at one point closed to cars, pedestrians and entrants due to flooding.

Organisers sent out a multitude of safety vehicles to help clear the track of standing water, and were able to get the racing underway at 11.30, two hours behind schedule. Conditions remain extremely treacherous however, as proved by the several crashes and offs in the opening four laps of the Dutch Renault Clio Cup, the first race to be attempted since the earlier cancellation.

A new schedule has been approved, with the first Formula 3 qualifying session scheduled for 13.35 local time. The second is due to be held at 16.40.

Sunday's schedule has not been affected.
