The Frenchman took pole position for the season opener with Carlin in Turkey last month, but skipped the Barcelona races. He has returned this weekend with Addax and grabbed the top spot with two minutes remaining of the second half-hour session.

Dillmann's lap demoted ART's Valtteri Bottas from the head of the times, and the Finn was then pushed back to third as his team-mate James Calado took second at the end.

Dean Smith made sure Addax and ART had the top four places to themselves by taking fourth for the Spanish squad. His lap as the chequered flag fell pushed early pacesetter Mitch Evans down to fifth.

Aaro Vainio was next up for Tech 1, while Ivan Lukashevich starred to be the top runner for Status Grand Prix in seventh.
