Testing: Van der Merwe heads times

British Formula 3 championship leader Alan ven der Merwe showed that he's set to continue his strong form into this weekend's race at Oulton Park by setting the fastest time in testing at the circuit today (Friday)

The Carlin driver edged out Nelson Piquet Jr in a closely fought session at the Cheshire track. Van der Merwe was just 0.090s faster than his Brazilian rival, and just a quarter of a second covered the top four runners.

Adam Carroll was third fastest, ahead of Danny Watts and Stefano Fabi. The Manor Motorsport driver caused the session to be halted early when he crashed heavily into the tyre wall at Island Bend. "He's got a head-ache, but he's okay," said team boss John Booth.

Ernesto Viso was the fastest scholarship class runner, with the 15th fastest overall time, narrowly ahead of T-Sport's Karun Chandhok.
