Spa Qualifying: Returnee Doornbos on top

British F3 returnee Robert Doornbos bagged pole position for tomorrow (Sunday's) second race at Spa-Francorchamps. Despite going off early in the session, the Dutchman set a time of 2m16.745secs with ten minutes remaining to seal Menu Motorsport's first-ever pole in the championship

Points leader Alan van der Merwe added second on the grid to his race one pole, as he was unable to respond to Doornbos' time in the closing stages because of a surfeit of yellow flags.

Frenchman Eric Salignon continued his impressive run of form with third on the grid, ahead of the first of the guest class interlopers, PREMA Powerteam pairing Robert Kubica and Ryan Briscoe.

Jamie Green, in need of wins if he is to have any chance of denying team-mate van der Merwe the championship, took sixth, while Danish team-mate Ronnie Bremer took seventh despite an off in the closing stages.

Championship front-runners Danny Watts and Nelson Angelo Piquet were eighth and ninth, the latter after a sizeable excursion, with Carlin new boy Alvaro Parente rounding out the top ten.

Steven Kane claimed scholarship class honours in 18th overall, ahead of title rivals Ernesto Viso and Karun Chandhok.

Race one starts today (Saturday) at 1520 (BST), with the second encounter at 1040 (BST) on Sunday.
