Snetterton 1: Van der Merwe steers clear

Alan van der Merwe extended his lead at the head of the British Formula 3 Championship by winning the first race at Snetterton today (Sunday) in his Carlin Motorsport machine

The South African, who started from pole position, led the race from start to finish in his Dallara-Mugen, but had to contend with two safety car periods. The first was caused when Ivor McCullough was pushed off at the Bombhole, shortly after losing his lead in the Scholarship Class. The second was required when new Scholarship leader Christian England was harpooned by his own team-mate Michael Keohane at the Esses.

At the second restart, second placed Nelson Angelo Piquet made a terrible getaway and spent the rest of the race fending off Ronnie Bremer, Danny Watts and Jamie Green, as van der Merwe scampered away for his second win of the season.

Rob Austin, Richard Antinucci and Adam Carroll, who all qualified in the top six, didn't feature in the top 10. Austin suffered damage in a bout of wheelbanging, Antinucci pitted for repairs and Carroll spun at the Bombhole.
