Silverstone 2: van der Merwe takes fourth win

Alan van der Merwe won the 10th race of the British Formula 3 championship at Silverstone today (Monday), his fourth victory of the year extending his already healthy championship lead

The South African became the first driver in ten races to win a race from anywhere other than pole position. Nelson Piquet Jr, who had started from the front, lost his chances of victory when he fluffed a gear change at the start, selecting third gear instead of second, and dropped down to eighth by the first corner.

This allowed van der Merwe to claim the lead at the start of the race, and he was never headed from there, pulling away to claim a comfortable win. Carlin team-mate Richard Antinucci finished second, after holding off Adam Carroll for much of the race.

Carroll had stalked the American closely from the start, and tried to pass on lap 12 with a lunge into Becketts. The Menu Motorsports driver failed to get past, and his lost momentum allowed Jamie Green to slip past heading into Stowe. Carroll tried a move back on Green at Becketts, but succeeded only in spinning out of the race.

Rob Austin then gained momentum over Green, and passed him into Becketts on the next lap on his way to finishing fourth. Danny Watts held onto fifth, showing his defensive driving skills under immense pressure from Piquet Jr. Karun Chandhok once again triumphed in the Scholarship class.
