Rockingham 1: Piquet all the way

Nelson Piquet Jr put the memory of Oulton Park behind him by storming to victory in the first race at Rockingham Motor Speedway, as this time it was the turn of his front row partner Jamie Green to stall on the grid

Having got away cleanly, Piquet was able to control the race from the front, lapping around 0.4s per lap faster than nearest rivals Clivio Piccione (Manor Motorsport) and Ronnie Bremer (Carlin). The latter made a superb start, coming from seventh on the grid to run third by the first hairpin on the opening lap. Small-scale mayhem erupted behind the leaders, as championship leader Alan van der Merwe made contact with Fortec's Robert Dahlgren and sent the Swede into the gravel. Fifth-placed qualifier Danny Watts tangled with Promatecme's Fairuz Fauzy, sending both to the pits for lengthy repair stops.

Bremer came under pressure from team-mate Van der Merwe but would not relinquish his podium position. Green recovered from the midfield mire to take seventh behind Will Power and Stefano Fabi, the latter keeping Green behind despite strenuous efforts in the final laps.

After stopping on track early in qualifying, Adam Carroll predictably provided fireworks. Lightning initial progress took him through the midfield, and the Menu Motorsport driver eventually claimed the final point in tenth behind Billy Asaro and Will Davison.

Class polesitter Karun Chandhok won the division, nearest rival Ernesto Viso unable to match the T-Sport driver, who will start from class pole again in the second race. Green has the overall pole position for this afternoon's second race, so will naturally be eager to avoid a repeat of his race one difficulties.
