Qualifying 2: Piquet completes double
Nelson Piquet Jr claimed his second pole position of the day in qualifying for tomorrow's second race at Brands Hatch, despite damaging his car early in the session
Piquet (Piquet Sports) went off the track at Westfield early in the session, hitting the barrier with his left-rear tyre. His team was forced into action to repair the damage, finally getting him out with eight minutes of the session to go. Piquet then set the fastest time in the dying moments, despite his car being somewhat less than 100 percent perfect.
Robert Doornbos (Menu) was second fastest, 0.170s off Piquet's pace. Billy Asaro (P1 Motorsport) was third, ahead of Jamie Green (Carlin) and Eric Salignon (Hitech).
After impressing in first qualifying, F3 debutant Lewis Hamilton (Manor) had a tough time. The Formula Renault champion crashed heavily at Westfield, bringing out the red flags. His team was able to repair the damage and get him back on track for the end of the session, from where he qualified 14th. However, he was then disqualified when officials noted that cars that caused a red flag were barred from running for the rest of the session.
Ernesto Viso (P1 Motorsport) led the Scholarship Class runners, qualifying 15th overall. His nearest rival was Steven Kane in 18th, with Karun Chandhok in 19th after causing the session's second red flag when he stuck his car in a gravel trap.
