Qual: Piquet shines

Nelson Piquet Jr. edged closer to clinching the British Formula 3 Championship at Brands Hatch with a pole and second place in qualifying on Saturday - as title rival Adam Carroll was left a deeply disappointed sixth and 10th

Piquet did not let a red-flag causing rain shower stand in his way as he grabbed a cool pole position for Sunday's first race on a damp track, before securing a front row slow alongside pole man Clivio Piccione for the second race.

But while it all went right for Piquet, Carroll was left massively disappointed as he slumped to sixth on the grid for the first race and 10th for the second. Needing to outscore Piquet by five points in Sunday's first race to keep his hopes alive until the series finale later in the afternoon, he faces a tough task.

"I've got absolutely nothing to say," declared the P1 Motorsport driver after qualifying. "To say it is a bad day is an understatement."

In fact, Carroll is likely to come under pressure from James Rossiter to keep hold of the runner-up spot in the title chase. Rossiter starts second and fourth on Sunday.
