Qual: Piquet on pole at Spa

Nelson Angelo Piquet has set himself up perfectly to seal the British Formula 3 drivers' crown at Spa-Francorchamps tomorrow (Sunday). The Piquet Sports driver will start this afternoon's first race on pole position, shielded from his championship rivals by Euroseries guest star Nicolas Lapierre.

Piquet cannot mathematically sew up the championship in the first race, but a clean run will as good as get the job done. And with the finishing order determining the starting grid for tomorrow, pole position should have long-term benefits.

The Brazilian, under the eye of his father Nelson Senior for the first time this season, admitted to receiving an all-important tow on his best lap, which explains the gap of three-tenths of a second to the rest of the field despite a car that had looked shaky in Friday practice.

Lapierre, whose Signature team is entering the Spa race as a one-off, embarrassed regulars by going second-quickest, even though the team is not accustomed to running on Avon tyres. Lapierre is a former Macau and Korean Grand Prix winner, and could be a strong bet for the races given that Piquet will need to be cautious.

Adam Carroll, who has a dim hope of the title, will start third in his P1 Motorsport entry. James Rossiter, who is second in the points, starts seventh for Fortec.
