Premat steals Masters victory
Alexandre Premat won the prestigious Marlboro Masters Formula 3 race at Zandvoort in Holland after ASM team-mate Eric Salignon threw away certain victory
Salignon beat pole sitter Premat away from the lights and retained his lead after a subsequent safety car period and was heading for a comfortable win when he made a mistake and ran off the track with just five laps to go. A two-second lead became a five-second deficit, and although he reeled Premat in over the closing stages, he could do nothing to prevent the Frenchman lifting the coveted trophy.
Adam Carroll took third, and best British series honours. The P1 Motorsport driver made an excellent start and restart, moving up a place on each occasion, to rise from fifth to a podium slot. He passed James Rossiter with an opportunistic move on the restart and held on for a deserved third place.
The safety car came out on lap two after a typically chaotic first lap. Fairuz Fauzy and Ferdinand Kool clashed, sending both cars into the barrier. Kool, making a one-off appearance for Alan Docking Racing, needed help to be removed from his car, and so the safety car was deployed.
Lucas di Grassi was fifth after a quiet race, Nico Rosberg sixth and Lewis Hamilton seventh. The Manor driver gained a place late on when Euroseries points leader made Jamie Green a mistake and ran wide at the Marlboro Bocht. He dropped to ninth. British series leader Nelson Angelo Piquet inherited eighth, while Danny Watts took 10th in the Lola-Dome following a charging drive and entertaining battle with Prema's Franck Perera.
