Pizzonia and Kiesa take Donington poles

The Scot had looked dangerous ever since testing last week, when he took his team Avanti Dallara to the fastest time. Antonio Pizzonia, now homing in to the title ever more closely, took pole for the first race, and third for the second race. RC Benetton's Nicolas Kiesa continued his steady rise to the top by taking pole for the second race and sixth in the first, while his Yugoslavian team-mate Milos Pavlovic scored a fifth and a fourth.

Pizzonia's main challenger for the title, Stewart's Tomas Scheckter looked less convincing than he has of late, and could only manage ninth on the grid for the first race, and seventh for the second. By contrast, his team-mate Narain Karthikeyan was an impressive third in the first session - though he slipped to tenth on the grid for the second race.

Gary Paffett took his customary pair of Scholarship Class poles, as he zeroes in on the class title. By now, only an act of God can stop the Englishman, and he could be taking the trophy home with him by Sunday evening if he can continue his clean sweep of the class.
