The 18-year-old finished his rookie season in 19th place, and subsequently claimed second in the Toyota Racing Series in New Zealand over winter.

Prior to his move to international racing, Piquet took two successive titles in Brazilian F3, with a total of 25 wins over the two years.

"From the first moment, the team gave me a true family feeling," Piquet said of VAR.

"I adapted to my new life in Europe very quickly. I can focus on racing for 100%.

"After my first full season I now have experience and know the tracks.

"Together with Van Amersfoort Racing it is my ambition to be a regular frontrunner in FIA F3 European Formula 3."

Piquet is the team's second confirmed driver for 2017, alongside David Beckmann.

Part of European F3 since its revamp in 2013, VAR has mounted recent title challenges with Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc, and last year won races with Callum Ilott and Anthoine Hubert.

Team boss Frits van Amersfoort said: "It is a pleasure to continue working with Pedro, he has developed his speed and skills continuously during the season.

"With a full season experience in his bag I am confident that Pedro will be able to stand out this forthcoming season.

"Our team will do everything to guide him towards strong results."

SATO JOINS MOTOPARK

German squad Motopark will field a pair of rookies alongside BMW protege Joel Eriksson this year, with Marino Sato added to its line-up.

The Japanese driver moves into F3 for what will be his third year in single-seater racing, after two in Italian Formula 4.

Sato joins fellow rookie Keyvan Andres Soori at Motopark in 2017.
