Nigel Melker given Norisring Euro F3 win after many drivers receive penalties

Nigel Melker has been declared the winner of the first F3 Euro Series race of the weekend at the Norisring after eight drivers were deemed to have gone too fast under yellow flags

The Mucke Motorsport driver finished third on the road behind Signature team-mates Laurens Vanthoor and Marco Wittmann. However, they were two of the drivers given 30-second penalties for improving their sector times under yellow flags during the race, leaving Melker as the winner.

"I felt like I slowed down a lot more than the cars around me during the yellow flags," said Melker. "That cost me a lot of time, and it meant that some of the other guys were able to catch me up very quickly."

Roberto Merhi, Jimmy Eriksson, Kimiya Sato, Kuba Giermaziak, Alon Day and Carlos Munoz were also punished, meaning that Melker was the only car running at the finish not to receive a penalty.

It also means that behind the top three, there were no changes to the positions of the original results.

Those penalised could have reason to feel aggrieved, as the yellow flags were out while the track was drying quickly after a brief shower had hit moments before the start of the race.
