Magnussen joins Carlin for British F3

Kevin Magnussen, the son of 1994 British Formula 3 champion Jan, will have the chance to emulate his father by contesting the series next season

Magnussen Sr won a record 14 times from 18 races in 1994 on his way to the title with Paul Stewart Racing. The Dane's 18-year-old son Kevin will race for Carlin after testing with the team at Donington Park and Brands Hatch recently.

"I am very pleased to be joining Carlin in British F3," said Magnussen, who is part of the McLaren young driver programme. "The championship has a very strong history and is still producing drivers that are progressing all the way to F1.

"With Carlin I know that I will have a very competitive car from the start of the season. I've really enjoyed the tests I've completed so far and already feel part of the team."

Magnussen graduated from Formula Renault to German F3 this season - finishing third for Timo Rumpfkeil's Motopark Academy team. He also took a reversed grid race win on a one-off outing in the F3 Euro Series at Valencia.

He joins Colombian racer Carlos Huertas and Racing Steps Foundation-backed Formula BMW graduate Jack Harvey in Trevor Carlin's six-car team, which has run the last three British F3 champions.

"We've been in touch with Kevin for a couple of years now and we've been very impressed with his progression up the motorsport ladder," said Carlin. "He's been very sensible in his approach; quietly learning the F3 ropes in Germany before making an assault on the British title.

"We've been very pleased with his pace in testing and I'm sure we'll see another Magnussen on the podium in Britain again very soon."
