Macau GP: Carlos Sainz Jr returns to Carlin as entry list released

Carlos Sainz Jr will join fellow Red Bull junior Daniil Kvyat as part of a six-car Carlin 'superteam' for Formula 3's Macau Grand Prix

The Spaniard, who is racing as team-mate to Russian Kvyat in the MW Arden GP3 squad this season, bolsters Carlin's line-up as the British team aims to emulate its 2012 victory with Antonio Felix da Costa.

2012 recap: Da Costa wins Macau GP

Sainz is one of three GP3 racers on the entry list, which was announced on Wednesday by Macau GP organisers.

While Kvyat has combined GP3 with a parallel F3 European Championship programme with Carlin, both Sainz and Double R Racing signing Kevin Korjus have to contest an F3 race to qualify themselves for the event.

Sainz will drive an old-spec Carlin-run car in an MSV F3 Cup round at Snetterton at the end of this month, while AUTOSPORT understands that Korjus will stand in for Alexander Sims with T-Sport in the European F3 finale at Hockenheim.

Most of the leading European F3 drivers are represented on the entry list, including main title contenders Raffaele Marciello and Felix Rosenqvist - the Swede finished a close second to da Costa in last year's race - as well as Alex Lynn, who claimed Macau pole in 2012 and is third in the European points.

Three drivers who have already been crowned F3 champions in 2013 are in the field: British title winner Jordan King; British National Class champion Sun Zheng, who steps up with Double R; and Japanese champion Yuichi Nakayama (pictured).

TOM'S driver Nakayama is one of two entries from the Japanese championship.

Both he and B-Max Engineering's Katsumasa Chiyo will race cars converted back to 'old'-spec Toyota engines. The Japanese series was the only one to introduce the new FIA-spec powerplants in 2013.

Other drivers not to have raced regularly in F3 this season include Carlin's Formula Renault 3.5 racer Jazeman Jaafar, who contested August's British F3 round at Brands Hatch and won two races, and Mucke Motorsport's Yuhi Sekiguchi, who took time out from his Super GT commitments in Japan to race in the Masters of F3 in July.
