During an eventful two sessions of running for the Dane, he survived a first session puncture at Signes, a spin at the long, fast right-hander at Beausset, and some technical issues with his Carlin-run Dallara-Volkswagen to lead the way.

On his first visit to the circuit, Magnussen's 2m00.969s lap from the faster second session was enough to put him top by just over 0.1s from his Carlin team-mate Felipe Nasr.

The championship leader was fastest of all in the opening session of the day and that time remained his best as he failed to improve in the afternoon - lapping around 0.15s off the time he managed in the morning.

"This afternoon we tried different things with the set-up of the car," said Nasr. "And I am feeling confident for tomorrow. Tomorrow is the day when I need to be quick."

Antonio Felix da Costa, who has previous experience of the French track from the F3 Euro Series and GP3, led his team-mate Pietro Fantin as Hitech cars set the third and fourth fastest times of the day. Da Costa got within 0.2s of Magnussen's benchmark, while Fantin ended the day just over 0.5s adrift of the pace.

Carlin quartet Rupert Svendsen-Cook, Carlos Huertas, Jack Harvey and Jazeman Jaafar filled the next four places, while Fortec team-mates Will Buller and Lucas Foresti rounded out a top 10 covered by 1.056s around the 3.61-mile circuit.
