Juncadella moves back into lead of F3 Euro Series with dominant victory at Spielberg
Daniel Juncadella moved back into the lead of the F3 Euro Series with a dominant victory in the third and final race of the weekend at Spielberg
The Spaniard started well from second on the grid in his Prema Powerteam Dallara, and when polesitter Felix Rosenqvist was given a drive-through penalty for jumping the start, Juncadella was left with a clear advantage.
He pulled clear of his pursuers and eventually took his third win of the year by over 14 seconds, taking a six-point series lead.
Race two winner Will Buller made a terrific start in his Carlin car, passing his team-mate Carlos Sainz Jr and Mucke driver Pascal Wehrlein in one move at the Schlossgold kurve on the opening lap.
Following Rosenqvist's penalty, he led the Swede's team-mate Wehrlein, Sainz and the Prema car of Sven Muller as the quartet squabbled over second.
Twice Wehrlein came past Buller for second at the uphill Remus Kurve, but twice he left his braking too late and ran wide, ceding the place back. Buller forced the German to put two wheels on the grass ahead of the Audi Kurve, and held his position to the end.
Muller made it past Sainz at Remus at half-distance, banging wheels with the Spaniard at the exit of the corner and pushing the Red Bull junior driver wide. He was then gifted third three laps from the end when Wehrlein ran wide at the final corner and lost momentum.
Sainz came home fifth after resisting the attention of Tom Blomqvist, and the ma-con driver repeated Wehrlein's trick at the last corner by running wide and losing a spot to Michael Lewis, who had hauled his Prema car up from 13th on the grid to sixth.
Esrtwhile points leader Raffaele Marciello stalled at the start from fourth on the grid and dropped to the tail of the field. The Prema driver dug deep however and made his way up to eighth by the finish; the last position being sealed with a neat move on Sandro Zeller (Jo Zeller Racing) at the Schlossgold corner on the penultimate lap.
Carlin driver Jazeman Jaafar, who was also penalised for a jumped start, completed the top 10 ahead of Rosenqvist.
Luis Sa Silva (Angola), Phillip Ellis (GU) and Andrea Roda (Zeller) all spun out in separate incidents.
