Jonathan Cochet Q&A

French Formula 3 championship leader and Pau winner Jonathan Cochet took pole position for Sunday's prestigious Marlboro Masters F3 race at Zandvoort. Autosport.com caught up with the young Frenchman after his impressive performance to find out about life in the French championship and how he rated his chances in the race

Jonathan Cochet Q&A

Yes. Last year we were not even in the race because we had a lot of problems with the tyres. I was on the front row for the qualification race but I had a problem in the pit lane and got caught by the red light and had to start from the back. So I did not even qualify for the main race!

Only two hours in France, and then it rained! But now we have a much better set-up.

Even in France a lot of people don't bother to look at the French championship because they think it is not good. I have won six races and had six pole positions this year, but for me it is more important to win the international races, because that is better for being noticed by Formula 3000 and Formula 1 teams. All the F3000 and F1 teams are in England so there is a lot of attention on British F3, but that doesn't mean it's the most competitive.

This is another race. At Spa it was a round of the French championship, so I wasn't able to take so many risks, but this time we are going to fight on equal terms.

We tested a lot of things - I was using an old set of tyres. We have the warm-up as well tomorrow to test more things. My set of tyres for the race has done only six laps, with just two of them attacking, so they are good for the race.
