Hockenheim 1: Win at the death for Glock

The first Formula 3 Euroseries race at Hockenheim today (Saturday) made one wonder if the entire field had run mad. In a race decided only by a last-corner dust-up, surprise contenders (none of whom gave a fig about the championship scrap going on down the field) came through to fill the podium.

Timo Glock was the man who claimed first, but only after he slid up the inside of Alex Margaritis on the very last turn. Nicolas Lapierre came from practically nowhere to finish third, whilst long-time leader Bruno Spengler went from first to sixth in the last five corners.

The explanation for this bizarre finish was tyres. The sky was dry but the track damp when the race started, but wets were still the thing to have today. Things were only complicated by a mid-race safety car period that allowed the slick-tyred runners to regain what they lost in the early laps.

The track came to these runners in the final laps, hence Glock's charge and Lapierre's sudden arrival in the lead fight with half a lap to run! Spengler, Margaritis and Britain's Adam Carroll were the main losers as their wets just couldn't hang on for those final few turns. Carroll ran most of the race in a fine third position.

Markus Winkelhock started from pole on slicks but ruined his chances with a couple of spins. He was far from the only one to trundle off-road today, as both Christian Klien and Ryan Briscoe had excursions into the scenery. Neither brought home a score, which keeps things open points-wise until tomorrow at least.

The race did not run to its scheduled 18 laps because the wet conditions and the safety car's intervention meant the time limit came first. After a crazy afternoon, a dry race tomorrow could see Briscoe crowned champion. Klien must beat him to stay in the hunt.
