Hockenheim 1: Briscoe wins opener
Australian Ryan Briscoe won the opening round of the Formula 3 Euroseries at Hockenheim today (Saturday) after passing pole sitter Olivier Pla before the first corner
Pla got too much wheelspin at the start and despite making a sharp move across the track, Briscoe (PREMA) was already ahead as they reached the first turn. Obviously ruffled by his error on the startline, Pla had to defend his second place strenuously on the opening tour, allowing Briscoe to vanish into the distance.
Pla was then hit by Robert Doornbos (Team Ghinzani) at the Mercedes Arena, dropping the Frenchman to sixth as his assailant escaped in second. Doornbos was now under attack from Christian Klien (Mucke), who in turn had team-mate Markus Winkelhock right behind him.
Klien briefly grabbed second at the Mercedes Arena, but Doornbos repassed him on the exit. Klien later outbraked himself at the hairpin, allowing Winkelhock to pass him for third with a brave move at the Mercedes complex of bends.
Alexandre Premat headed home ASM team-mate Pla in fifth, but they were both subsequently disqualified for a front wing technical infringment.
