Gunther open to taking Williams F1-bound Stroll's Prema F3 role

Formula 3 European Championship runner-up Maximilian Gunther is open to staying in the series next season if he does not manage to move up the ladder

Gunther open to taking Williams F1-bound Stroll's Prema F3 role

The 19-year-old German, who has taken four wins and seven pole positions in his sophomore F3 season, conceded the title earlier this month at Imola to his Prema Powerteam stablemate Lance Stroll.

Mercedes-supported Gunther could be a leading contender to replace Stroll in effectively leading the Italian squad in 2017, but he is still weighing options.

"At this stage of the year nothing is fixed about the future," he told Autosport.

"Of course it's one opportunity to stay with Prema in Formula 3, but there are other options.

"I can't talk about them in detail - they're not fixed and have not gone very far.

"Of course as a racing driver you always want to step up in higher categories, but at the moment I just want to focus on Formula 3, doing the job there as good as possible.

"And then we will see what happens in the future."

Gunther holds a 36-point advantage over George Russell in the race for second in the championship with just this weekend's Hockenheim finale to come.

"I feel very comfortable and familiar in Prema, and it's a great atmosphere - it's very nice to work with these guys," he added.

"Maybe we will work together in the future, but I would also say at the moment many things are possible. There are many factors that are deciding things."
