Force India expands Hilmer deal to include GP3 team

The Force India Formula 1 team has expanded its partnership with GP2 team Hilmer Motorsport to include supporting its new GP3 team as well in 2014

Force India expands Hilmer deal to include GP3 team

The Silverstone-based F1 squad recently announced a tie-up with Hilmer for GP2, and the German team subsequently took over Russian Time's GP3 entry following the death of its team owner Igor Mazepa.

Force India team principal Vijay Mallya said: "Our partnership with Hilmer to field a GP3 team reaffirms our commitment towards developing a new generation of drivers.

"Combined with our support for grassroots karting, our presence in GP3 and GP2 lends valuable support to up-and-coming racers and will help them to realise their potential."

The F1 team's deputy team principal Bob Fernley recently told AUTOSPORT that Force India has made changes behind the scenes to get more out of its young driver programme, adopting systems it believes are similar to those used by McLaren.

"The [F1] reserve driver programme was relatively easy because you believe that they're ready for that step," Fernley said.

"When you come into GP3, GP2, you're not quite sure whether they're ready or not, but we're doing a lot of analysis work.

"It's important because the Nicos [Hulkenberg] of this world will probably, at some point, leave us and we've got to find the next Nico coming through."
