The race has long held the title of FIA Intercontinental Cup for F3, but last year the governing body grew its arm's-length involvement when a delegation of staff from the flagship European championship visited the event.

The recent World Motor Sport Council stated: "The FIA is working to support the local organiser on the sporting, technical and media side, and to help increase the impact of the event."

FIA Single-Seater Commission president Gerhard Berger, who was the catalyst for the revival of the F3 European Championship in 2012, said he is happy with the basic structure of the Far-Eastern classic.

"What we are talking about is to increase our relationship with Macau," said Berger.

"I love Macau, and we all appreciate very much its importance.

"In the last years for some reason we've been not close enough to this event, controlling it and supporting it - we want to increase the relationship with the ASN in Macau, to help and improve it step by step."
