Ferrari protege Antonio Fuoco to race in F3 European championship

The 17-year-old Italian has long been tipped for the ride, after winning the Formula Renault ALPS title last season with Prema in his maiden car-racing campaign.

Calabria native Fuoco had his first taste of one of Prema's Dallara-Mercedes at an Imola test last October, and also tested with the team in the build-up to Christmas at Estoril and Valencia.

He will attempt to follow in the footsteps of fellow Ferrari Driver Academy member Raffaele Marciello, who won the 2013 European F3 title and is now making the switch to GP2.

FDA boss Luca Baldisserri said: "Antonio surprised even himself in 2013, winning the very competitive Formula Renault championship.

"In Formula 3 in 2014 he will be up against more battle-hardened opposition."

Fuoco is the third driver to be confirmed as a Prema driver for F3 this year, after Dennis van de Laar and Lotus Formula 1 junior Esteban Ocon.

Along with Marciello, van de Laar and expected Prema team-mate Nicholas Latifi, he is one of the drivers set to contest the Florida Winter Series, which kicks off this weekend at Sebring.
