F3 heads for Brands GP circuit
Tomorrow¹s Grand Prix drivers are set for their toughest test yet in the Green Flag British Formula 3 Championship this weekend
The series pays its only visit of the season to the Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit, widely regarded as one of the most challenging circuits in the UK. However, it is one which is used less often than others are and so very few of the 25 drivers will be familiar with the track.
That means that the top two drivers in the championship standings, Antonio Pizzonia (Brazil) and Tomas Scheckter (South Africa) will be learning it as they race and the advantage may go to India¹s Narain Karthikeyan who won here last season.
"I like Brands - it's one of the best circuits in England. Any driver would be crazy not to like it," says the Indian driver. It has some fantastic corners on it, like Dingle Dell. There you are in fifth gear and have to be careful not to take off like a rally driver because you bounce over the kerbs."
Last year Karthikeyan drove for Carlin Motorsport but has switched to Stewart Racing for 2000. Both Carlin and Karthikeyan will be hoping to be able to bag another win despite the absence of the other half of the equation.
Pizzonia, meanwhile, will have to readapt to a Formula 3 car having successfully tested for the Benetton Formula 1 team at Valencia, Spain, last week.
In the Scholarship Class, catering for year-old cars, top Brit Gary Paffett is aiming to maintain his 100% record of wins and earn the £125,000 Scholarship prize.
The Green Flag British F3 Championship race runs for 30 minutes starting at 2pm on Sunday June 4 and is a hero championship within PowerTour, the new motor sport-based show created by the BRDC.
