European Formula 3 Championship is revived for coming season by FIA

AUTOSPORT magazine revealed last week that amid falling grid numbers in the category in recent years, a proposal to merge the British championship with the Euro Series to create a full European championship would be put in front of the FIA World Motorsport Council.

While this scenario has been averted, the FIA International F3 Trophy, which began last year in a bid to join up the world's most prestigious races in the class, has been scrapped.

Instead, the WMSC has created a European championship that will run over 10 rounds, comprising seven Euro Series events, two from the British championship - including the Pau Grand Prix - and an additional event at Brands Hatch that will run on the DTM support bill.

The announcement means that the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort and the Macau Grand Prix revert to being standalone events.

The European F3 Championship previously ran from 1975-84 with Alain Prost, Michele Alboreto and Riccardo Patrese among the champions. It was replaced by a European Cup from '85-90, while the current Euro Series began in 2003 following a merger between the German and French series.

2012 calendar

April 29 Hockenheim (D) May 13 Pau (F)* May 20 Brands Hatch (GB) June 3 Spielberg (A) July 1 Norisring (D) July 28 Spa (B)* August 19 Nurburgring (D) August 26 Zandvoort (NL) September 30 Valencia (E) October 21 Hockenheim (D)
