European F3 drivers called to meeting after Spa crashes - Jean Todt

The Formula 3 European Championship field will be called to a Saturday evening meeting over driving standards for the second race weekend in succession, FIA president Jean Todt has confirmed

While the first race of the Spa weekend ran without a safety car, the second featured a return of the spectacular crashes that marred the previous round at Monza.

Spa race two report: Dennis wins amid huge crashes

Foremost among these was an accident triggered by Lance Stroll moving across on Mikkel Jensen, who in turn crashed into Felix Rosenqvist as they battled for the lead, putting all three out of the race.

There was also an aerial backflip for Gustavo Menezes when he clipped the rear wheel of Brandon Maisano as they fought for fourth.

Todt said: "We need to highlight further education to young drivers - it is something that has been done and we will do it again a bit later today.

"All the Formula 3 drivers will be asked to come to a meeting and participate, and I'm confident that if you educate them that they will take that into consideration."

Jake Dennis, who won the second race and was immediately behind the Stroll-Jensen-Rosenqvist collision, said: "I saw them three-wide and thought, 'I'm going to make at least one position out of this when someone locks up'.

"I'm guessing you can see Lance squeeze everyone towards the outside on the video."

One leading driver told AUTOSPORT earlier in the weekend that he was doubtful what could be achieved from collective meetings, and that safety and driving standards would be better served by getting a handful of the worst offenders together and giving them a stern warning that strong punishments would result from any further offences.

Before news of the Spa meeting came through, Dennis said: "I'm sure there'll be another meeting where we'll all be told off and told that we drive like children."

Meanwhile, Emanuele Pirro has come in for praise from drivers and teams for the way he is handling the review of incidents on his first weekend as an F3 steward.

Santino Ferrucci, who finished second in race two, said: "I got a warning after race one, but the stewards are doing a much better job I would have to say.

"I know what it's like to be rookie and I know it's difficult, but we have to get a little more respect for everybody."
