European F3 championship introduces rookie class for 2014

The Formula 3 European Championship is to introduce a separate rookie classification for 2014

European F3 championship introduces rookie class for 2014

The class will be open to drivers who have competed in a maximum of three race weekends in F3, or in cars with F3 levels of performance.

Drivers will score points in the overall championship as normal, with the 10 highest-placed newcomers in each race scoring points for the rookie class.

The concept was used for much of the life of the preceding F3 Euro Series.

Prema Powerteam boss Rene Rosin welcomed the plan.

"It's a good idea," said Rosin. "When there were only 12 cars it didn't make any sense, but the championship has lots of interest now and we have plenty of requests from rookies who are interesting in driving. This will make it more attractive for them."

The championship is expected to keep the same race-weekend format as this season, with three races at each round and a total of six hours of track time, including free practice, qualifying and racing.
