Euro F3 Monza: Pascal Wehrlein takes double pole for Mucke
Pascal Wehrlein kicked off his final weekend as a Formula 3 driver by claiming pole position for the opening two races of the F3 European Championship at Monza
The German, who is DTM-bound this season as replacement for Ralf Schumacher at Mercedes, stole the fastest time on the final lap from Lucas Auer, even though he reckoned he lost time diving past two cars on the run into Parabolica.
Moreover, another of the Mucke Motorsport driver's late laps was the best of the drivers' second-fastest times, which set the grid for race two.
"It was OK," he said. "The problem is that with 30 cars there's a lot of traffic.
"My last lap was my best but even then I was held up. I could have found another tenth [he was 0.152 seconds down on his best lap in the final sector]."

Auer, who held pole until the final lap, was pipped by just 0.029 seconds, although he held on to second from Raffaele Marciello, his team-mate in the Prema Powerteam squad.
Marciello grabbed the other front-row slot for race two, for which Auer drops back to third.
Fourth on the grid for both races is Red Bull junior Tom Blomqvist, who was in the same slipstreaming group as Auer to start his season in positive fashion in his EuroInternational Dallara-Mercedes.
Harry Tincknell took fifth in the lead Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen, but lost out to Alex Lynn on second-best times.
Prema driver Lynn went off twice, at Ascari and Parabolica, so could not be repaid in kind on slipstreaming by team-mate Marciello.
Fourth-row slots were claimed by Carlin's Jordan King and Mucke driver Felix Rosenqvist, who topped free practice but was angry not to get a clear lap in traffic this afternoon.
As well as King, other UK drivers to take top 10 slots included Josh Hill, who did an excellent job with minimal experience to emerge as Fortec's top runner, and Will Buller in a Nissan-engined T-Sport's Dallara.
Qualifying for race three follows later this afternoon.
