Donington British F3: Harry Tincknell wins, Jack Harvey into points lead
Harry Tincknell scored his traditional reversed-grid British Formula 3 International Series victory at Donington Park as Jack Harvey moved into the championship lead with just one round remaining
Tincknell converted his pole position into the lead with a good start, but the title chase took a dramatic twist when pre-race points leader Jazeman Jaafar was eliminated in a first-lap collision with Alex Lynn at the Old Hairpin.
After three laps behind the safety car, Tincknell was untroubled from the restart and swept to his fourth reversed-grid win of the season in his Carlin Dallara-Volkswagen.
"I got a really good start, which has been my strong point this year," said Tincknell. "I haven't been feeling 100 per cent for the past few days and we had a tough time in the test, but we've been steadily working as hard as we can and we're on the pace now."
Pipo Derani took second, but had to defend second place early on from title-chasing Fortec Motorsport Dallara-Mercedes team-mate Felix Serralles. But Serralles took too much kerb at Coppice, unsettling the car and allowing Carlin runner Pietro Fantin to dive into third, with two wheels on the grass, on the approach to the Esses.
Serralles also came under pressure from fellow Fortec man Hannes van Asseldonk, but gathered himself together to take fourth. Van Asseldonk held Harvey's Carlin Dallara at bay for fifth.
Jaafar had made a superb start and passed Lynn around the outside exiting Redgate, but there was slight contact as the Carlin car went by. As Lynn braked for the Old Hairpin, the Fortec runner realised he had a left-rear puncture, but it was too late and he started to spin, clipping Jaafar onto two wheels as both cars exited the race.
The result means that Harvey, who starts the final race from pole, is now three points ahead of Serralles and five in front of Jaafar, with rain expected later on Sunday.
Hywel Lloyd collected his second National Class win of the weekend in his CF Racing Dallara, but class champion Spike Goddard finished within half a second of the Welshman.
