Davies secures funds for rest of season
British Formula 3 ace Matt Davies has landed a deal that has secured his seat with Team Avanti for the rest of the season after he has struggled for a budget for the first half of this year
Davies has managed to lurch through the season so far by gathering the necessary funds on a race-by-race basis. And running at the front from the outset, including a win in the opening round at Silverstone, did not seem to make the search for cash any easier.
The 24-year-old Brit's lack of finance finally came to a head at Brands Hatch last weekend when he was forced to miss rounds 15 and 16 of the championship. But Davies says sitting on the sidelines helped to secure a deal that will keep him behind the wheel of his Dallara-Opel until the end of the season.
"I'm confirmed now for the rest of the year," said Davies. "So it's probably better that I didn't do Brands because we could take stock and sort out a deal to keep me in the car."
Despite being a championship frontrunner at the beginning of the season, Davies currently lies a distant seventh in the standings, 118 points adrift of series leader Takuma Sato and he will struggle to get back amongst the leaders.
However, Davies is looking forward to competing in Sunday's non-championship Grand Prix support race at Silverstone and despite qualifying only 11th, the sense of occasion afforded by the on-looking Formula 1 teams, still makes the race an exciting prospect.
"You could say it's a bit like a job interview, because the pressure will be huge," he said. "But I always go well here and it's definitely the biggest race I've ever been in."
