Combe race 2: Watts makes amends

Having thrown away potential victory in the first of two races at Castle combe, Danny Watts did it all right at the second time of asking to notch up his maiden British F3 win

Perhaps chastened by spinning out of the lead in the first race, the Hitech Racing driver simply drove further clear of his rivals with a faultless performance. "I drove every corner at 100%," he told wellwishers afterwards. "Every corner except the last one before the flag..." This was also the team's first F3 win.

With the track layout at Castle Combe making it difficult for a driver to stay in the wake of the car ahead through a corner, making a move wasn't easy, which is why a hard-trying Adam Carroll had to make do with second place behind Fortec's Robert Dahlgren, making it a clean sweep for Renault-powered Dallaras.

First race winner Alan van der Merwe had the occasional look at passing Carroll, but settled for fourth, knowing that with title rivals Jamie Green and Nelson Piquet Jr running some way behind him that his already large points advantage would become larger still. And so it did, his tally on Sunday evening of 175 points putting him fully 64 points clear of second-placed Green who was classified ninth.

Piquet Jr wasn't classified at all, having crashed at Camp on the 16th of the scheduled 20 laps when running eighth. This brought out the red flags, but he wasn't credited with eighth place due to a regulation in the championship's rule book that states that cars must be running when countback is employed.
