Carlos Huertas leads Silverstone British Formula 3 practice

Carlos Huertas set the fastest time of the day in a pair of rain-affected pre-race practice sessions ahead of the final round of the British Formula 3 championship at Silverstone

The Colombian, who is about to complete his third season of racing at this level, lapped the 3.7-mile grand prix circuit in a 1m53.703s best in the second of two sessions, moments before a brief but heavy shower slowed the circuit.

"The weather was kind to me," said Huertas. "But the car feels good in the dry. It was useful to get some wet running also, and I am happy whatever the conditions are tomorrow. Today counts for nothing really, but I hope it is a good omen for my final F3 races."

Huertas finished up just over two tenths of a second clear of new champion Felipe Nasr, and over sixth tenths up on Rupert Svendsen-Cook in a Carlin 1-2-3.

Nasr topped the times in the slower morning session, ahead of Carlin team-mates Kevin Magnussen, Jack Harvey and Jazeman Jaafar, with Fortec's Fahmi Ilyas and series returnee Alexander Sims (Motopark) rounding out the top six.

GP3 frontrunner Mitch Evans (Double R Racing) was only 17th quickest in the morning session, but ended the day fastest of the Mercedes-powered runners in fourth, ahead of team-mate Scott Pye and Harvey.

Fortec duo Will Buller and Lucas Foresti were next, with Magnussen and Hitech's Pietro Fantin rounding out the top 10, ahead of Jaafar and Sims.
