Carlin drafts in Chilton for GP3 test
Carlin will field its ex-Formula 3 racer Max Chilton in this week's first GP3 test at Paul Ricard
The test sessions on Thursday and Friday are the first opportunity for the 10 GP3 teams to run the new cars, and most are expected to field drivers who will not race in the championship to help with the initial development of the car.
Chilton, who has graduated from three years in British F3 to GP2 for this season, has been drafted in by Carlin alongside the team's current F3 racer Adriano Buzaid and Hitech's Lucas Foresti. Buzaid and Foresti will drive the GP3 car just two days after completing a two-day British F3 test at Rockingham.
"We know from previous experience how difficult it can be to run a new car for the first time and the importance of learning as much as possible very quickly," said team boss Trevor Carlin. "The teams that gain the most information in pre-season testing will be the teams that lead in the early stages of the championship so we're taking this first test very seriously.
"We're employing some very experienced drivers to give us as much feedback and direction as possible. Potential teething problems aside, we will be in great shape to offer drivers a very competitive package by the end of the test on Friday.
"I am very much looking forward to seeing the new cars out on track first hand at Paul Ricard and meeting with our potential new drivers for the inaugural season."
