British Formula 3 plans return to UK roots in 2014 revamp

The British Formula 3 International Series is to revert to 'national' status from the 2014 season

British Formula 3 plans return to UK roots in 2014 revamp

Series promoter Stephane Ratel announced at Spa on Friday evening that a six-round calendar featuring just one foreign trip - supporting the Spa 24 Hours - is being worked upon.

He added that the new FIA F3 engines would not be introduced for 2014, meaning competitors can use the existing powerplants.

The change has come after an interim season in 2013. Lack of support forced British F3 to scale back to just four rounds, with the main class being contested by drivers and teams who were adding the races to their European F3 Championship schedules.

The new initiative means that British F3 will no longer be attempting to entice competitors to add races to their main programmes.

"It has been going internationally for many years," said Ratel. "But you have FIA European F3, and there's no point adding another international series.

"British F3 will revert to what it was before - pure British F3, with five races in the UK and one supporting the Spa 24 Hours.

"After discussing with the teams, for whom we operate the championship, we have decided to run this year's engines with the new [2012 onwards] chassis and the older [2008-11] chassis.

"We are confident this should bring a lower budget and make it a step for people who want a first experience of F3 with a smaller calendar and at a lower cost."
