British F3 to Reconsider Oval Race

British F3 International series organisers have told Autosport-Atlas that they will reconsider holding an oval race in the future following the success of the German F3 Cup's debut at EuroSpeedway last weekend

British F3 to Reconsider Oval Race

The German F3 Cup became the first European single-seater category to race on an oval last weekend, with the series' drivers already having had to complete a mandatory American style-rookie training programme before taking part in the race.

British F3 had planned to hold a race on Rockingham's oval in 2003, however the plans stalled over concerns about crash protection and costs associated with engine rebuilds. The series stopped using Rockingham's alternative road course in 2003, after teams complained about the Turn One chicane.

British F3 coordinator Jeremy Lord confirmed to Autosport-Atlas that while the main emphasis for next season's calendar would be the ongoing negotiations with Motorsport Vision to get Brands Hatch and Oulton Park on the schedule, he would again approach the idea of an oval race with series promoters SRO.

"It would be spectacular and something we will look at," Lord confirmed. "There were concerns over rear crash tests for the but that has been addressed with the latest car designs. Engines could be a concern still, but it is certainly an idea, because it would provide something extra for our series.

"Drivers would have to go through a training programme, and such a race would be better placed towards the end of the year when drivers were more used to their cars."

A spokesperson for Rockingham said they would be keen to reopen negotiations with British F3 about holding a race on the oval.

"We would welcome any series that wants to race," said the spokesperson.
