British F3 hopeful of 15-car grids in 2013

In an address at Thursday evening's media launch at the London headquarters of the Stephane Ratel Organisation, championship manager Benjamin Franassovici said that interest was good for the Silverstone opener on May 25/26.

He reckons that a bigger entry was likely for the second round, supporting the Spa 24 Hours on July 25-27.

AUTOSPORT understands that at least eight cars - four from Carlin and two each from Fortec Motorsport and Double R Racing - are likely to be committed from current F3 European Championship teams.

Carlin has also stated that it is keen to run two further cars in British F3 rounds. Sources indicate that there is further interest from other F3 European squads.

Meanwhile, European F3 Open teams, including British-based Team West-Tec, are planning National Class campaigns, and there is early negotiation with German F3 Cup contestants.

Franassovici said: "In close cooperation with our partners Cooper Tires, we are committed to safeguarding the long-term future of the series and protecting its rich heritage.

"The support we received when we made our announcement regarding the revisions to the series was overwhelming and assured us we are taking the right direction.

"It was important to make a decision early. Current British F3 teams have replied positively and all are planning to enter cars. The National Class, now also open to cars from other series in Europe, has been well received.

"The right decisions have been made in good time to allow British F3 to continue beyond 2013. We will continue to do our best to support the series and ensure it retains its prestige as well as continuing to be seen as an essential step on the ladder to the highest levels of the sport."
