Alexander Sims says T-Sport quick enough to win in European F3

Alexander Sims believes that T-Sport is quick enough to challenge for wins in the Formula 3 European Championship, after taking two top-five finishes for the team at the Norisring

Sims, the 2008 McLaren AUTOSPORT BRDC Award winner, made his return to F3 on the German street circuit, and qualified just three hundredths of a second from pole position on his seasonal debut in the category.

The McLaren GT works driver won a reversed-grid race in the same chassis in a one-off Euro Series round at the Nurburgring last year, and also contested the Macau Grand Prix.

Nissan-powered T-Sport started the 2013 season with Will Buller leading the squad, but the Northern Irishman quit the team after the fourth round at Brands Hatch and is now focusing on British F3, which he leads with Fortec Motorsport, and Formula Renault 3.5.

Sims said: "I think the car is very good, I really do. I don't know about all the circuits, but my feeling from the Nurburgring, Macau and here is that it's pretty damn strong.

"Will's pace in pre-season testing was mega, and in my experience a car doesn't lose pace from testing to qualifying.

"In an ideal world things would have worked out better with Will and I wouldn't be needed, but it's nice to prove the car is there.

"The sessions this weekend when we weren't absolutely on it were down to me."

Sims is confirmed in the car - alongside the team's regular driver, Australian Spike Goddard - for the next European championship round at the Nurburgring, and AUTOSPORT understands that there is a possibility that the deal could be extended for further races.
