British Formula 3 Championship returnee Sam MacLeod topped qualifying at Snetterton for Fortec.
The British driver led most of the dry, sunny session, but had an eventful journey to the top spot.
Along with second-placed team-mate Martin Cao, he was stripped of some laptimes early in the session for failing to respect track limits.
Once the two frontrunners were staying within the white lines at Williams, the crucial right-hander leading onto the Bentley Straight, the session settled into a pattern of Cao chipping away at MacLeod's times before MacLeod responded to stretch his advantage once again.
Cao did manage to top the timesheets with six minutes to go, but his advantage was shortlived as MacLeod broke the timing beam moments later to go quickest by three tenths of a second.
Cao sniped at MacLeod's lead once more, moving within a tenth, but once again Rockingham winner MacLeod hit back immediately to finish atop the timesheets by four tenths.
MacLeod's pace was sufficient to secure pole for both races one and three, as the drivers' second-best times generated two identical grids.
Fellow Fortec man Matt Rao was third-quickest, after surviving a mid-session warning for going beyond track limits.
